My Story
Kia ora! Ko Jono ahau.
I was born in Blenheim and moved to call Ōtautahi home in 2023 after stints living in various cities across Aotearoa, Australia and Canada.
Studying and pursuing a career in Graphic Design, I’ve spent the past 15 years exploring the world of digital arts, working for various internationally known companies and agencies. In recent years I made the decision to start freelancing, creating space to follow a natural pull back to more traditional art mediums. As a Yogi and Taoist, my art is heavily influenced by nature, connection and spirituality.
With these values considered, it’s no surprises I was drawn to toi Māori and the Tūhono Taonga, Tūhono Tāngata kaupapa. Under co-founder; Jon Jeet’s guidance, I’ve learnt to carve and now teach wānangas (workshops) alongside him and other kaiako on a casual basis. Considering my surname it feels a bit like fate to be pursuing an art form connected to a trade my ancestors would’ve once lived off. I love working with natural materials as there’s something special about being a part of the whole creation process—from finding a rock in the awa to finishing a polished piece someone can cherish.
