This kōuma (or breastplate) has been carved out of a beautiful piece of serpentine pounamu sourced from the West Coast. It has galaxy like colours and becomes transparent around the edge of the stone in sunlight, revealing even more patterns. The breastplate is often thought to be a symbol of resilience and protection and with this piece the 9 haehae represent the stars of Matariki. However, this said, it’s my belief that the wearer should cast their own intentions on the taonga based on their needs. All these treasures are a source of peace, mana and connection that uplift your mauri. They are also amazing sensory tools to feel or hold in tough times.
