This taonga is a contemporary take on a Niho (meaning tooth in te reo). It was often associated with the tooth of a taniwha, whale or shark. This shape is said to represent strength or guardianship. However, this said, it’s my belief that the wearer should cast their own intentions on the taonga based on their needs. All these treasures are a source of peace, mana and connection that uplift your mauri. They are also amazing sensory tools to feel or hold in tough times. This particular piece has been carved out of Pakohe pounamu (or argillite) from the Invercargill region. Pakohe was pounamu used commonly by iwi located around the top and bottom of the South Island as well as the Manawatū–Whanganui area. It’s a matte opaque stone and can be found in an array of colours from; greens to reds, greys and black.
All taonga I carve comes with a 100% organic cotton bag to keep it safe when not wearing.
