Herekorenga Taonga
Pounamu Necklace – Rei Gallery Matariki Exhibition (2025)
The whakaaro around this taonga is to speak of herekorenga - to be free and unbound. This was inspired by the Matariki creation kōrero where the 7 fish caught in Tataraimaka’s net were freed by Tane (Atua of Forrest and birds) who cut them free and casted them into the night sky where they now shine bright as stars watching over us.
This seemed like a relevant topic in current times where; war, discrimination and inequality still rages on. I hope for this toi to remind the wearer of their birth right—to be free, healthy and happy.
This piece is currently on display at Rei Gallery – 10b Norwich Quay Lyttleton, Christchurch.
